Pain is a danger signal. The brain generates pain to warn us of physical threat and motivate us to take action to prevent bodily harm. But the brain can also misinterpret danger, signaling a false alarm. Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) is an evidence-based treatment that teaches patients to interpret sensations correctly. When pain is an accurate reflection of danger, the patient will take necessary action to prevent further damage. However, when the pain is unwarranted or overamplified, the patient will learn to deactivate danger signals and subsequently, pain signals.
Participants will learn how fear fuels pain, which can include anxiety, stress, and hypervigilance around both physical symptoms and one's general life or environment. Participants will also learn the most effective pain-reducing techniques, allowing patients to eliminate pain and maintain recovery.
